Got Balls?
POTTSTOWN, PA – Balls are a tradition in Pottstown. Some say that Pottstown has the biggest balls. Back in its heyday, the balls at Sunnybrook Ballroom were always bouncing and its ballroom was always full.
But when balls are held for pleasure…well…those are the kind we like best. December 17 marks the date of the next big pleasure ball in Pottstown (and it’s unfortunate that those kind of balls don’t get held every day…so take advantage of it folks!).
The lead story in today’s print edition of The Mercury focuses on $4,000 that the borough contributed to next week’s holiday costume ball planned for the Elks Club.
Funding for Pottstown holiday ball questioned
Much banter has been taking place over this issue. We here at SavePottstown!! will let more knowledgeable borough experts debate and keep this issue alive. Most of this ball handling dilemma was discussed at this past Wednesday’s monthly borough council meeting. Mayor Bonnie Heath grabbed hold of the ball issue and also talked about hooters and prayers. We’re not sure if she was asking for prayers for hooters…or prayers for balls…or maybe a combination of the two. She also mentioned something about hooters at the ball…so if you’re into balls and hooters…you need to contact PDIDA to purchase your tickets.
Regardless, the mayor is asking concerned citizens to pray for those who hold differing opinions than hers. And isn’t that what religion in America is all about? Falling in line, not asking questions and following the sheep in front of ewe? Using the power of prayer on people you arrogantly think are going straight to hell because their beliefs and opinions do not match your own. And while you’re praying for others…make sure to wave that flag!
Let’s get back to talking about balls.
The borough used federal funds for the $4,000 donation. Which is surprising considering that just this past June, the borough voted 4-1 against waiving fees incurred for police services at Memorial Park during the two days of the Fourth of July celebration, adding nearly $5,000 to event costs.
During Wednesday’s meeting Borough Council President Stephen Toroney pointed out that the tax money donated to the ball did not come from Pottstown taxpayers, but rather from federal funds…so some poor schmuck from Indiana helped to pay for the donation. Just remember folks…the federal taxes taken from your paychecks DID NOT contribute to the ball donation. That should allow you to sleep better tonight.
All we can say is GOODNESS GRACIOUS GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!

I hope to see everyone at the “Ball”. My wife and I will be there and it sounds like a great opportunity to have a ball. (really bad pun intended)
THANK YOU, SP!
After a week of volunteering with our Lincoln Elementary students
for Santa’s Secret Shop, I came home to read this and was cracking up hysterically after getting 1/2 way through your literary spin on the latest news in Pottstown!
I was feeling a bit down due to missing the NJHS Induction at the MS today, and I was not looking forward to coming home today to the dishes and the email. Glad I hit the email first!
What great laughs:) Michele Pargeon (will not be attending)
OOOOOOhhhhh Jason Bobst had big balls ’til he dropped ‘em. Bonnie Heath has some big balls to deck the halls – GOD BLESS HER ONE AN ALL!! Now Jody Rhoads REALLY has big balls. Jeff Leflar from Code Blue has those big balls that I like best. Steve Toroney and his flock only WISH they had balls big or small …
HAPPY BIG BALL TO ALL!!!
(The Social Pages say that SP has the biggest balls of all) !! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee LET’S PART PART PARTY!!!
SP, at 7:45 AM on a Saturday I’m laughing out loud, thank you! May your balls be merry and bright.
Ahhhhhh!!! Great!
Pottstown does have a history of BIG balls, alright. I’ve also heard that with all of that dancing, moving and shaking that Pottstown’s balls can of get pretty hot and sweaty. Throw in a little alcohol and that adds the potential for those balls to get a little hairy.
Hot, sweaty, hairy BIG balls…yep, I think that just about sums things up.
(Completely crude…I know. I can only pray that someone is praying for me.)
I wanna know why you are all missing the AC/DC connection…
We had a Hooter in town for this when the best headline for the gig would’ve been AC/DC since they did the song ‘Big Balls’ on the Dirty Deeds album (boy – am I dating myself or what). So, if we have big balls in town does that make the town the home of dirty deeds? Perhaps if we cleaned up the crime our balls could be pure and our town would be fair…
I’ll just keep thinking happy thoughts!
Steph, are you suggesting that the next ball in Pottstown should be “The Dirty (Deeds) Ball?” Maybe planners should decide to have more than one and call them “The Dirty (Deeds) Balls?”
I have to say, with history of Pottstown’s balls, throwing in a “Hooter” is a nice touch, don’t you agree?
ohhhh, this could go on and on….
You get me…
Yes, instead of a masquerade ball…people will have to come w/ black strips over their eyes (referencing the album cover).
It could catch on…
Yes, the Hooter was a nice touch, though a group of ‘em from a certain eatery just might have drawn a bigger crowd?
How was the attendance at the event? I hope that it was enough to not be deemed ‘too exclusive’ an event. Show of hands…how many went?
Speaking of event, Positively Pottstown is having a Happy Hour this week – visit her link and check out the invite and RSVP instructions if you can make it…it’s at the Brick House. That should be a good time, sadly I think she’ll be Hooter-less but a good crowd makes for a productive meeting of the minds!
Please stop . . .
In-arguably tasteless humor on my part SR, I will stop. I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help myself. Yes, perhaps I got carried away … but I have to say that I had a couple of great laughs thanks to this “got balls?” post.
Thanks for asking nicely, SR.
Thanks for the post, SP!
Just a spot of humor – no offense intended.
Stopping now.
Seriously, what was the turnout like? Anything that bears reporting about the event or its future?
I’m playing catch-up, again! It looks to me like the ball is coming up – THIS Friday.
Since tickets include two free drinks, does that mean the borough has chosen to use federal funds to pay for BOOZE? Gosh, if I was an elected official, I would not have touched that with a 10-foot pole. Too many iffy variables for me to finance such an event. I guess I just have no balls at all.
Yep, coming up.
The only mention I find is that tickets are almost sold out…how many tickets were for sale? There seems to be a way to guage the preliminary success of the hype and I’d like to know how the organizers/others feel this is progressing. With the pre-hype I seem to have gotten the wrong impression about the event – was this on purpose? The message about what was really going on could have been a bit clearer and, certainly, IF the goal is drawing people to an event in P’town (unless it is an exclusive event) why was there not a big tah-doo made about it (unless I missed that, too). I just have a difficult time wrapping my head around what the purpose of this ball really is and how it benefits/showcases the town or what the future plans might be (if there are any).
The event is supposed to be a throwback to the 1920′s but let’s not forget the current state of affairs in all the nostalgia. Suspending our disbelief for one night on the town, given all the happenings in town, seems to be valuable IF and ONLY IF there is a plan for this to become a component toward the larger revitalization we desparately need. Again, I think we should be focusing on community events not events open to the community.
I eagerly await word from the organizers on the event and its place in the future of P’town.
Thanks for stopping!! I’ve been laughing so hard that it’s starting to hurt!
I agree with Steph about opening these sorts of events to everyone! These sorts of events should be benefiting everyone, not just the self-described and self-absorbed “elite” (not)
