POTTSTOWN, PA – Last night’s Pottstown School Board meeting did not disappoint.  As he mentioned to taxpayers Wednesday morning outside his Feist Avenue home, Board President Rick Huss announced his President’s Task Force Commission, which will be comprised of a team of school district leaders and Pottstown citizens to decide, as a group, what the future holds for Pottstown’s elementary schools.

The Mercury, late last night, posted a brief report of the meeting and will be posting additional information (and a video!) later today and in upcoming print editions.  You can read the article here:

Votes mark shift in elementary school debate

Our good cyberspace buddy Roy’s Rants also posted a report on last night’s meeting.  You can read his post here.  Mo over at Pottstown’s Blog also has some good observations.  You can read her post here.

During the two and a half hour plus meeting, more than a dozen citizens voiced their concerns to the board regarding the proposal to apply for federal stimulus funds.  Only one individual asked the board to move forward with the loan application for the federal funds.

Solicitor Stephen Kalis reported to the board on his Sunshine Law findings.  And one of the most notable actions taken last night was the move by the board to make the Neighborhood Schools Committee a sub-committee of the Facilities Committee. The Facilities Committee is chaired by board member Robert Hartman, Jr.

Thank you to all concerned citizens who attended last night’s meeting.  As reported by The Mercury, over 50 people attended the meeting.  Nice job folks!

Save Pottstown!! is very happy to see Board President Rick Huss step up the plate and assume his leadership role as president.  We knew you had it in you Rick!!  Together, as a community, we can now decide on the best avenue for our children and the improvement of their education.

Mrs. Harris made the comment “only $108.00 a year per taxpayer” in her statement defending Mr. Hylton’s agenda. According to the Pottstown Schools website, she lives in the 300 block of High St. They are apartments. She has no idea what citizens pay for taxes. I posted a comment on the Mercury’s website concerning this. I wonder if it will be posted.
May I suggest to anyone who posts on the Mercury’s site, to cut and paste the same comments on this site so we can see what if anything is going on.

  2. We wholly support this bold and courageous move on behalf of our School Board President. In his wisdom we believe he will discover just how committed, bright and dedicated the people of Pottstown are.

As President of the Board, I presume that he could have simply stood to say that he had made a unilateral decision to call for a halt to the NSC’s plans and left it at that. Instead, it appeared that he had done a good deal of soul searching prior to making a decision to galvanize our community and our leadership,

In the spirit of the Urban Land Institute and the budding Pottstown Partnership we offer our support and our heart felt thanks to Mr. Huss and the Borough of Pottstown.

Many thanks to the members of Code Blue for their forthright actions in helping to create an atmosphere of inclusion!

The emergence of REAL leadership is a beautiful sight to behold!

  4. readytomove…I hope you are readytomove on the enormous task of revitalizing our community…we are moving foward at last!

I think you are referring to the slums that we have featured on our website? These are only the tip of the iceberg. I would love to have access to a video camera and someone who knows how to operate one well. Oh the stories we could tell.

Thanks so much for visiting our website. You are most welcome to come to our meetings, as is everyone. They are fun and not too stuffy. We, in fact, are having one tonight at 7pm 146 King St. (The PAL building).

It would be lovely to meet you.

Kudos to Mr. Huss for leading and moving the board to a process that is logical and allows for broad participation. And to Mr. Kalis for his clarifications and informed opinion. Now comes the hard part… rolling up the sleeves and going into full-scale problem-solving & consensus-building mode during a really tough economy… all while keeping the faith that the right solutions will emerge from the right process.

Mr. Huss showed great leadership by announcing his plan to move forward at the beginning of the meeting. That took the wind out of any angry sails from the audience and allowed people to think clearly, reasonably; less emotionally. This was one of the best run meetings since December; well lead and conducted. It shows the power of working together for a solid cause!
