POTTSTOWN, PA – Unbelievable.  Simply unbelievable.

A potential business owner wants to purchase a property, make it into a business and live in the upper floors of the building.

Did we mention that they’re artists?  Creative folks that Pottstown desperately needs more of.

So, throw in the incorrectly perceived taboo word tattoo and all hell breaks loose.

This is what happened at last Wednesday’s borough Zoning Hearing Board meeting.

You can read The Mercury’s report of the meeting here:

Tattoo parlor rejected by Pottstown hearing board

The borough allows a pawn shop and rent to buy business in downtown Pottstown, but when an artistic couple wants to purchase a building, live in the upper floors and offer artistic services, they get shown the big hand of the borough.

How do you promote a town and increase its real estate values?  Start recruiting artists.

The old boy network in Pottstown needs to get the boot.  They’re good for nothing but obstruction and frustration in the path to move Pottstown forward.

Wake up and start realizing that the borough needs to start a concerted effort to attract artists to live and offer their services in Pottstown.  It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Otherwise, you’ll get more of what we already have.  And how’s that been going for the borough?

It’s soooooo obvious that what isn’t working is the current system and those ‘enforcing’ it. We need to be more open and small business friendly to make changes we can build from.

Anyone bother to ask the ‘esteemed’ Zoning Board members how the town prospered when they were younger? Industry would likely be their answer – absent of that it is clear we need to take those willing to invest here and then others will follow and a new type of industry will be created. Folks, it is called retail stores and once those are in place other service-oriented business follows and then industry might return.

Remeber how the West was built from small main streets – things grew from need and population centers. A simple lesson in infrastructure is required for these shameful Zoning Board members!!

We should surround this couple the way the Mercury and local news surrounded the ‘Shawn graduation’ story!! Let’s make a public example of what’s old and tired in P’town. This couple paid a lawyer, for God’s sake, to come fight this battle – those are the passionate people we need in town and they should be granted a variance and given media coverage so that someone in authority can right this horrific wrong – TAHDAY!!!!!

I certainly hope there is an appeal process to this decision and this couple hasn’t been turned off enough to Pottstown to go through it.
